Office ramblings: Head in the sand!!
Politics! They’re a bit like maths to me – I know they are there, I know they are necessary but for the life of me I can’t get my head round them!
Politics! They’re a bit like maths to me – I know they are there, I know they are necessary but for the life of me I can’t get my head round them! To be honest I’ve been a bit of an ostrich where most politics are concerned – nicely covered in my firm belief that God is sovereign over all of it anyway! So why do I need to worry! But then there are those Scriptures like Ezekiel 22:30: So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found no one. Coupled with that, people expect me to be aware of what is going on politically in Israel and the Middle East at least, because of my job at CMJ – and I have begun to think that, for two reasons, I should make the effort to understand at least the basics!
- Because of the Scriptures that make our responsibility as citizens of God’s earth very clear – such as Ezekiel 22 and others!
- As a member of staff at CMJ UK, I should have more of an understanding – to be able to pray more wisely and also to help those who phone up to discuss the latest events.
So where do I start? Perhaps I should begin by explaining what I already know! (This won’t take long!)
I know that Israel is in the centre of God’s plans for now and for the end times. I am aware that Israel isn’t always ‘as white as snow’ but that the Jewish people have at least a fundamental belief in the sanctity of life. I hear names like Hamas, Hezbollah and the Knesset – although I have a vague understanding of what they mean, I couldn’t (wouldn’t even try to!) explain their meaning or very much about what they do. Of course I also know that ultimately Israel won’t be destroyed – but again I couldn’t point you to the scriptures that say that – not without asking the audience or phoning a friend!
So those are the two places I shall begin this journey – finding out a bit more about those organisations and getting some scriptures in my head. If you fancy joining me, then read on!
