Learn first-hand about mission from within a mission organisation which has been around since 1809 on the CMJ UK Internship Programme. “But you will receive power when the Ruach ha-Kodesh has come upon you; and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and through all Judah, and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:8

Who is CMJ?

CMJ is the Church’s Ministry among Jewish People. We were formed in 1809 when Joseph Frey and a group of supporters founded the “London Society for promoting Christianity amongst the Jews” (LSCJ), which was later changed to “Church’s Ministry amongst Jewish people” (CMJ). By 1810, William Wilberforce had become Vice President of CMJ and with his friends from the Clapham Sect, Thomas Babington and Charles Simeon, provided CMJ with the credibility and authority both within the Church and outside it, for the work they were doing. In the 1830s Lord Shaftesbury joined CMJ and used his political influence to encourage the restoration of Israel and the return of Jewish people to their homeland. Among the projects he supported was the building of a Church in Jerusalem, Christ Church, which is still active in Jerusalem’s Old City on the grounds of CMJ’s Guest House and ministry centre.

Frey also realised that when a Jewish person followed Jesus they were cut off from their community, losing their livelihood and support network, so he set up industrial schools for training, as well as educational Free Schools for children to learn the ways of the Lord from an early age. While the way CMJ does mission has evolved and changed over the years, the passion and drive to see God’s chosen people come to know their Messiah has never dwindled. We believe, as Paul wrote in Romans 1:16, For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes—the Jew first and also the Gentile.

Our mandate is expressed through the “three E’s” of our vision:

  1. To Evangelise using the Gospel of Jesus the Jewish Messiah – to the Jew first, but to anyone and everyone who is open to hearing about the sacrificial love of Jesus
  2. To Educate the Church about the Jewish roots of her faith
  3. To Encourage Jewish believers in Jesus as many still become an outcast from the Jewish communities
