Volunteering in Israel

The Challenge
This summary introduces you to the challenge of volunteering to serve at an ITAC centre in Israel. ITAC has four centres, all of which host international congregations and three of which have Guest Houses, needing short term volunteers to help run them. Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds are needed and are welcome. Could this be you?

Be Prepared
Volunteering at an ITAC centre is, for many people, the first time they have lived away from home or in a non-western country. Volunteers need to prepare themselves for the cultural differences they will encounter and be ready to be gracious and understanding in the face of different attitudes, language, dress and food. The physical and the political climates are markedly different and living in community presents real challenges - and rewards!

"I had a lot of ideas about the Holy Land ... These notions were broken down after about a month of being there and seeing the real people and country"
A past-volunteer

"To be part of community was the most exciting aspect of being a 'vollie' ... extremely hard but worthwhile."
Rachel

The Work
The work is mainly domestic and maintenance, with some reception duties.

Accommodation is in shared bedrooms. Volunteers have one day off a week and some holiday according to their length of stay.

Christ Church - Jerusalem Christ Church Christ Church is situated just inside the Jaffa Gate in the Old City of Jerusalem. It has a forty-five bed guest house; a church used by English, Hebrew, Filipino and Rumanian speaking congregations; a book shop and a coffee shop. A minimum age of 18 is set for volunteers at this centre.

Beit Bracha

"The land at the moment is dry ... barren hillsides ... sun-scorched areas ... so sparse, yet I feel rich in inspiration."
Pippa

"My nine months at Immanuel House were the most incredible time of my life... getting to know guests ... many exciting and challenging people."
Claire

Conditions of service
Volunteers need to be eighteen or over; in good physical and mental health; fully committed Christians and involved in their local church. Most find their time in Israel to be one of intense discipleship and learning.

"Understanding Middle Eastern culture, with its acceptable behaviour patterns, dress standards and food, is quite a problem for some."
Jenny, former Staff Worker

The Cost
You are required to find your own air-fare and medical insurance. Once in Israel CMJ arranges your board and keep however you will be asked to consider sponsorship to cover both these expenses. We can provide publicity material and assist you in this matter.

Prayer Support
