The History of Bride Song
Twenty years ago two friends of artist Christine Maybank, one Jewish and the other Gentile, asked for a series of designs for a canopy for a Jewish wedding. The theme was the ‘Song of Songs.’ Christine accepted the commission thinking that such a canopy could well become a resource for the Messianic community in Israel. For some reason the canopy was never completed but the designs remained. A series of meditations followed to accompany each image and the whole work lay dormant until now. In 2008, I was asked by Christine to consider using the art work to inspire a stage presentation, using dance and drama. Musician Gill Hayward contributed a series of sensitive songs to accompany the images and my task was to add a script and bring the work together. This is now completed.
Bride Song is the story of a love stronger than death, a love which prevails across the pages of history as the Jewish people and the Gentile church move closer to the second coming of the Lord Jesus. The bridegroom is coming back for His bride.
In planning a wedding nothing takes precedence over the preparations made by the bride herself. Determined to be at her most perfect, on the great day, she spends time and great effort in being ready for her love. In ‘Bride Song’ we examine the story of the Jewish people who have often run from their destiny only to be followed by the love of their zealous God. ‘Bride Song’ portrays something of God’s great love affair with mankind, in which His first chosen people, the Jews, are brought back into a new relationship with Gentiles as both embrace His love and forgiveness in Jesus. It seeks to portray to the Jewish community how God stands by His covenantal love for them and is yearning for Gentile and Jewish believers to embrace and become ‘one new man’ in the end time bride. ‘Bride Song’ seeks to reach out to Jewish people with the love and salvation of Jesus.
The context is clear: we see the world falling apart and the physical consequences of spiritual decay daily on our television screens. The whole earth is threatened as the delicate infrastructure that has so elegantly held together the threads of life for centuries is destroyed. Moral absolutes give way to ‘relative truth’ and society groans under the weight of lawlessness. In addition political pressure from around the world tightens its grip on the nation of Israel as many of those who surround her seek her annihilation. Against this backdrop we are calling a group of artists together to present ‘Bride Song’ for in the midst of the turmoil and distress of our day, believers in Jesus are urged to get ready for a wedding. In the face of the hurricane that is coming ‘Bride Song’ stands and proclaims the still small voice of the Lord calling His bride to prepare. We believe this is a project which God wants to bring to fruition. Will you join us? Will you consider hosting the Bride Song production, or showing the Bride Song film in your area?
