The Bible coming to life
The Bible Comes To Life!

"The Bible is boring and I don't understand it" How often have you heard this or something similar, or even thought it yourself! It needn't be so. You don't have to be a theologian to understand most of the Bible's main messages if you have some background to the customs and practices of the times in which it was written.

The Bible was not written for western twentieth century society. It is basically a Middle Eastern book written many centuries ago. It reflects the cultures and world views of peoples whose ways were quite different from ours. That's why CMJ aims to bring the Bible to life in a variety of ways.
John the Baptist wore camel hair and a leather belt - did this mean he looked like Tarzan?
The Prayer Shawl is worn today by all orthodox Jews and has a history that goes back three thousand years to Moses.
Jesus' Genealogy is presented in the gospels of Matthew and Luke. They differ - was one wrong? What is so important about Jesus'ancestry?
Agriculture in Jesus' time was very different from today. Jesus often spoke in parables that referred to the soil, seed, sowing ....
Dates and Locations for 2006 to 2007 are now available. See if there is an exhibition going on near you.
To bring the living reality of biblical life and customs, CMJ provides a travelling exhibition that is hosted by churches and other Christian organisations. As you walk into the Exhibition you will be struck by the colourful display stands explaining Jewish festivals and traditional life in the Middle East. You will have the opportunity to look in detail at models of the Temple and Jerusalem. You might find a potter working at a wheel and you may see other Eastern characters walking around, such as a scribe or a shepherd. If you stay, you will probably be able to listen to a talk about life in Bible times by someone dressed in an authentic costume from the region.

The exhibition is offered at no cost to the hosts on the following conditions:

...That we may take a free-will offering after each presentation (not schools’) to meet our costs and support our ministry,

...That we will make a charge of £250 per day, or part thereof, for a Schools programme – (this works out at less than £1 per pupil on average),

...In order to secure a booking we request a £500 deposit which is returned after the exhibition. There is a sliding scale of return depending on how close to the actual reserved dates any cancellation, or change of plan, takes place,

...Fuel and ferry costs are met by the host church(es)

Other considerations:

Our preference is that the ‘Bible Come to Life’ exhibition is hosted by a group of churches. It can, and has been, undertaken by single churches but the meeting of staffing needs as well as the communal and spiritual dividends are best fulfilled in a co-operative venture. The more churches that participate the greater the rewards.

The exhibition has static displays but different presentations every day. It usually runs from Saturday to Wednesday or Saturday to Thursday. The exhibition team will arrive on a Friday afternoon and, with the help of volunteers, set up the exhibition in about four hours. The dismantling and packing of the exhibition takes place after the final presentation on the Wednesday/Thursday and takes about 2 hours to do so – again with the help of volunteers.

The exhibition requires a large hall or church that is around 25m by 15m – although we can display in 2 or 3 smaller rooms.

The exhibition team, usually two members, will require accommodation and meals during their stay
